We’d like to introduce you to Jack, another new recruit joining Urbanise to strengthen our construction team! Reading Construction Management at Salford University and then working for some familiar names in the industry, Jack initially started with us on a temporary basis to manage a new project at Mayfair Court, Fallowfield. However, we soon realised that Jack would be a great addition to our construction team and he accepted our offer of a permanent job earlier this year. Jack is now counting down the weeks to handover at Mayfair Court, we must be finished ready for the new wave of student residents arriving in September, so we thought that it was an ideal time to catch up with him to see what he thinks of working in construction and now at Urbanise.

JOB RELATED:

What’s your name?
Jack Rushmere.

What’s your title?
Site Manager.

How long have you worked at Urbanise Developments?
Since November 2020.

A bit about your job / what does your job entail?
My current project is a live student accommodation complex in Fallowfield, Manchester. The works are structural which means there is no luxury of working in the dry! The nature of the works means a lot of noise and vibrations throughout the building all while trying to keep the students happy as they “Study” & “Revise” for upcoming exams. This can be sometimes problematic but with good communication with the building management helps to avoid any delays or disputes for stopped works. My job entails the daily running of the site including all trades and ensuring that all works are carried out with Health & Safety at the forefront of everything. Hosting site meetings & progress meetings with the client, principal designer and managers from the sub-contractors. As part of my job, I am responsible for ensuring that all the paperwork is kept up to date and filed correctly including the Construction Phase Plans, Risk Assessments and sub-contractor RAMS.

What is a typical day like?
Cold, wet and windy, it is Manchester after all!

Favourite memory from work?
There are too many! My best memories are with the people I’ve worked with and the banter we’ve had and the jokes that get made every day that end up in everyone laughing!

What’s a common question you get from clients?
How old are you? How long have you been doing this? Where did you work before coming to Urbanise and what projects have you worked on? Most are usually quite surprised with my age and being in the position that I have with the amount of responsibility I hold.

What do you like most about your job?
Progress, I like seeing construction projects from inspection to completion and seeing the progress made throughout. It is like putting your own stamp on a building that will last for years! I also like the variety of in the industry, no two projects are the same or the challenges that come with them.
