We’re thrilled to be able to share an update on our recent Hadrian’s Wall adventure. The walk was undertaken by team members Matt, Louise, Jack, Shaun, Jennifer, Danny, Richard and Gary, who was joined by his son. This six-day journey wasn’t just a trek; it was an experience that tested our determination, strengthened relationships, and deepened our commitment to well-being.

Beyond the physical challenges of navigating rugged terrains and unpredictable weather, the Hadrian’s Wall fundraising walk provided us with a unique opportunity to give back. Through the combined efforts of our team and the generosity of sponsors, we exceeded our fundraising goals, raising over £3,000 for the Lighthouse Construction Charity—a cause close to our hearts.

As we ventured beyond our office walls, the historic Hadrian’s Wall served as a stunning backdrop. The journey gave everyone the opportunity to chat in a relaxed way, with work being put aside in the fresh Northumberland and Cumbrian air.

There were many personal highlights taken from the walk. Jack commented that he felt a real sense of accomplishment upon completing the challenge. Richard found the relaxed and enjoyable environment during the journey brought him closer to the team in ways he hadn’t experienced before. Shaun, our construction lead, was thrilled that the walk provided the site and office teams with an opportunity to mix – something that isn’t always possible day to day, ultimately bringing the company closer together.

There were also a number of challenges to overcome, Jennifer’s resilience in combatting the heat during the first leg of the journey showcased real determination and set a positive tone for the entire expedition. We also had injuries affecting Gary and Danny to contend with. Their ability to push forward regardless showcased the strength and commitment within our team. The middle section of Hadrian’s Wall, with its scenic hills and breathtaking views, became a favourite for the team.  The landscape became even more spectacular during this section, but the walking and undulation somewhat harder. As hard going as it was, this stretch allowed us to witness the most preserved parts of the wall, as well as numerous forts and battlements. Amidst the challenges, laughter was frequent, turning falls in the mud into light-hearted memories.

Regrettably, on a sadder note, we became some of the last people to witness the iconic Sycamore Gap tree in situ. Just a few days after passing by it was mindlessly cut down by vandals. This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of our natural heritage. That said, in the heart of nature, our team found a refreshing break from the routine of everyday work life. The fresh air, shared laughter, and collective achievements acted as a reset button for our collective well-being.

Building success together

Whilst organising the fundraising walk, both Matt (Ops Director) and Louise (Project Services Director) remained keenly aware of our staff’s commitment and drive, especially over the last 12 months. Delivering top-class projects and ensuring client satisfaction is no easy feat and the Urbanise team are relentless in this pursuit. In the last year we have had staff working permanently away from home, others working in a mobile fashion driving the length and breadth of the country and some on long term, maintenance projects. All things that take their toll on top of the actual job of building. Despite the demands of the job, we recognise that our team is the backbone of Urbanise’s success. Supporting them, both professionally and personally, is crucial. Our recent experience of walking Hadrian’s Wall with the team was not only a showcase of the stunning English countryside but also a testament to the camaraderie within our team over the six days. We’re eager to take this energy forward to other future good causes, in and around the construction industry.
